SILENT HILL: Townfall Save File Location, Backup & Steam Cloud
Find Townfall saves on Windows / Steam, make a separate backup, check a missing folder and handle Steam Cloud conflicts without guessing which copy to keep.
Where are the Windows Steam saves?
Open File Explorer, select its address bar and paste this path:
%LOCALAPPDATA% means the Local folder in your Windows user profile.
Inside it, follow Townfall → Saved → SaveGames. The reported directory
is separate from the Steam game-installation folder.
The path comes from Prima’s PC guide. This page covers Windows / Steam. It does not establish an Epic Games, Steam Deck or PS5 file path, or promise that saves transfer between stores. For saving inside the game, use the phone and autosave guide.
Make a backup before changing anything
Our backup checklist keeps a copy separate from the files the game uses:
- Exit Townfall completely.
- Open the folder above. Copy, rather than move, the entire
SaveGamesfolder. - Paste it outside the live Townfall folder. Give the backup a date and a
useful note, such as
Townfall-backup-2026-09-29-before-NG-plus. - Open the copy and check that it contains files. Keep the original folder and any earlier backups until you have confirmed your progress in-game.
Prima also recommends copying the parent Townfall folder if you want to
preserve settings alongside progress. Record which folder you copied; a
settings-inclusive backup and a save-only backup have different contents.
Neither can reconstruct progress that was already missing when you copied it.
The folder is missing or empty
Use these checks before creating folders or reinstalling the game:
| Check | What to do |
|---|---|
| Correct platform? | These instructions are for Windows / Steam. Other installations need their own verified path. |
| Correct Windows account? | Open the path while signed into the profile used to play. |
| Path copied exactly? | Paste the short path above into Explorer, including both percent signs. |
| No files in this location? | Check whether the game shows existing progress before making any new save; do not overwrite it as a test. |
| Progress was on another PC? | Inspect that machine and its synchronization status before assuming the files were deleted. |
An absent folder alone does not identify a crash, a cloud error or a corrupt save.
Steam Cloud conflict: which copy should I choose?
Valve explains that a conflict means local and cloud data differ and Steam cannot choose between them automatically. Compare the displayed times with when and where you last made progress. Do not always choose “cloud” or “local” regardless of the circumstances.
If synchronization failed, resolve that error before launching again. If progress is missing after changing PCs, check the previous machine; its files may not have uploaded. Steam Support cannot recover lost saves for you. See Valve’s cloud troubleshooting.
Keep your separate backup while investigating. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for a dated copy you control.
Can I restore a backup or fix a damaged save?
We have not tested a Townfall restore procedure. Before replacing live files, preserve the current folder as another backup and identify the date, platform and progress of the copy you intend to use. Do not merge random individual files or delete the only copy of a run to try a fix.
A backup preserves what existed at the time it was made. It does not prove that those files are healthy, or that a later patch accepts an older copy. For crashes, follow the PC checks and include the exact error in a support request.
Plan the next run
- Before New Game Plus, keep the completed run identifiable.
- For ending attempts, use the guides’ in-game save planning as well as a separate PC backup; copying a folder does not create a new story checkpoint.
- For Reject The Help, follow the restriction on manual phone saves. This file guide does not change that trophy’s rules.
The directory is source-checked, and the backup checklist is our file-management advice. No game save was inspected, restored or repaired by this site.
