SILENT HILL: Townfall Difficulty Settings — What Changes & What Does Not
Story Mode gives abundant healing and light enemy damage, puzzle hints have a Hinted option, and no trophy requires a higher difficulty tier.
Does difficulty matter in SILENT HILL: Townfall?
For the trophy and achievement list: no. The roadmap author’s verdict is explicit — the list rates 4/10 and everything can be done on Story Mode with puzzle difficulty set to Hinted. There is no requirement to play on a higher tier for any goal, including the platinum.
What the verified sources say Story Mode changes
- Healing is plentiful. Story Mode carries an abundance of healing items, so dying in normal play is unlikely.
- Enemies hit lightly. On Story difficulty enemies do little damage unless they grab you — being spotted is not a death sentence, and running away works.
- Puzzle hints can carry you. The puzzle-difficulty setting includes a Hinted option; combined with Story Mode the roadmap author treats the full list as clearable on the gentlest setup.
- New Game Plus counts on any difficulty. Reliving A Nightmare — the complete-an-NG-plus-run trophy — explicitly accepts any tier.
The two difficulty dials
ShowGamer’s dedicated guide (read in full, 2026-09-24) confirms the settings are two separate dials:
| Dial | Settings | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Main difficulty | Story Mode · Normal · Nightmare | Enemy count, enemy health, enemy damage, resource pressure. Per ShowGamer: Nightmare spawns more enemies that can detect your flashlight — a Nightmare-specific stealth cost worth knowing before you pick it |
| Puzzle difficulty | Normal · Hinted | Hinted highlights puzzle-relevant inventory items and shows key clue text in red — it does not auto-solve anything; Normal leaves documents unhighlighted |
- Puzzle solutions never change. Codes, combinations and mechanics are identical on every combination of dials, including in New Game Plus.
- Both dials can be changed at any time from the Game Options menu — no restart, no earlier save needed.
- No trophy or achievement requires a difficulty. The full list is earnable on Story Mode (roadmap + ShowGamer agree).
What is NOT verified
We will not invent what we have not read:
The full tier ladder and its exact namesResolved 2026-09-24: Story Mode / Normal / Nightmare, and puzzle Normal / Hinted (ShowGamer’s dedicated difficulty guide, read in full).- Per-tier enemy counts and damage numbers — the directional effects (fewer/less on Story, more on Nightmare) are ShowGamer’s statements; exact multipliers are not published in the sources we verified and are not invented here.
- Any achievement-pistol or ending interactions with difficulty beyond the “any difficulty” NG+ statement above.
The tier names above are sourced from the published difficulty guide; future official changes will be checked separately. For the officially listed accessibility features (remapping, subtitles, visual comfort and more), see the controls & accessibility page.
How to choose, practically
- Playing for the story: Story Mode + Hinted. Nothing is locked away from you — the endings use a score that is still being checked, not your tier (see the endings overview).
- Collecting everything: same settings; your attention belongs on the missables discipline, not on combat.
- Trophy speed runs: still no reason to leave Story Mode — the Fleeting Visit threshold is time-based and tier-agnostic.
What this page rests on
The tier names, menu behavior and unchanged puzzle solutions come from ShowGamer; the trophy route comes from PowerPyx. Both were reviewed on 24 September 2026. Their observations are attributed above and are not measurements performed by this site.
